Dismissed teacher grilled by Bidhannagar Police over Bikash Bhavan violence and hostage allegations

Dismissed teacher Rajat Haldar was questioned for several hours on Monday at the Bidhannagar Detective Department office in connection with the alleged vandalism and unlawful confinement of government officials at Bikash Bhavan during a recent protest. The police summoned Haldar as part of the investigation into the incident, which occurred amid demonstrations over alleged irregularities in the teacher recruitment process.

According to officials, Rajat Haldar and a group of protestors allegedly entered Bikash Bhavan without permission, damaged property, and locked several government employees inside rooms for several hours. Following the incident, the administration lodged a complaint under serious sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges related to trespassing, vandalism, and wrongful confinement.

Ahead of his appearance, Haldar publicly claimed that he had participated in a peaceful protest and was subjected to police brutality. “I will cooperate fully with the investigation,” Haldar said, while also demanding that action be taken against police personnel involved in the alleged lathi-charge on protestors. He maintained that the protest was aimed at seeking justice over irregularities in teacher appointments.

Police officials stated that the interrogation is part of standard legal procedure and statements are being recorded from all concerned parties, including both protestors and officials. The investigation remains ongoing, and further summons may be issued depending on the findings from the initial rounds of questioning.
